I.                    COURSE DESCRIPTION/Outline (reflects needed skills)

 

This is a select group of auditioned singers that also participate as members of Madrigal Choir. This group is recognized as one of the top vocal jazz groups in the nation. Consistent with choir syllabi skills, they also master improvisational skills, sound equipment, and solo singing. Many qualify for Honor groups at all levels. Individual vocal style is encouraged within the ensemble context. They have a very busy and active performance season in December with their Christmas caroling engagements, and again in the Spring for their Jazz festival/competition events.

 

II.                 MATERIAL REQUIRED

(a $20.00 material fee is requested)

1.      Music Folder/Music

2.      Jazz Theory Workbook

3.      Pencil/Highlighter

4.      Staff paper

5.      T-shirt/outfits

 

III.               GOALS: knowledge to be acquired, technical skills, etc. ESLR’s and standards must be referenced. Most goals encompass all of the ESLR’s in some way, but specific ESLR’S are A (original thought), B (collaborative situations) and c (skill demonstration)

 

The purpose of this class is to provide a strong background in vocal jazz and stage presence. Performance is a high priority. Students will be expected to:

·        Sing acapella vocal jazz arrangements

·        Improvise using 12-bar blues format

·        Sing jazz solos(standards)

·        Master microphone techniques

·        Demonstrate a basic knowledge of sound equipment and set-up

·        Understand basics of jazz theory

·        Sing with rhythm section

·        Develop strong stage presence
