Course Description/Outline (reflects needed skills)

The Web Design team is responsible for the maintenance of the Aptos High School Web Site.  Depending on the student’s skills and interests, he/she may end up working in one or more of the following areas:

·        HTML/Web Support

·        Programming

·        Journalism

·        Photography

·        Video

·        Graphic Arts

·        Animation

 

Even though this class is set up lab style, lectures and class instruction will be provided on a daily basis. Students will be expected to critically analyze information, synthesize results and provide answers that demonstrate a through understanding of the coursework.

1.                  Students are expected to be responsible and self-directed to ensure that they remain on task and maintain pace with the rest of the class.

2.                  The above goals will help students become self-directed individuals who can set ambitious and realistic educational, career and personal goals and who can demonstrate responsibility in meeting course expectations.

Units of Study (activities)

Students will respond to real-world assignments depending on the team they are assigned to and the tasks they are assigned to complete.

·        Learning the basics of Macromedia Dreamweaver MX

·        How to incorporate the use of Microsoft Word and Excel into Dreamweaver

 

      & Million Word Challenge

o        Weekly newspaper or magazine article reviews

Methods of Assessment (may include tests, portfolios, projects, essays, etc.)

Class work, short quizzes, tests and participation will determine the student’s grade.  Students will be graded on their level of professionalism, quality of work and completion of work according to deadlines.

Methods to accommodate language learners and other target populations

An after school computer lab is available four days a week whereby business teachers have time to work with students. Teachers work one on one in this lab with students who may have difficulty understanding assignments or finishing their work on time.

Class Procedures (missed assignments, make up work assignment format)

ü               Students who need extra time for assignments or review may use the computer lab before school or after school with teacher permission.

ü               Students are always welcome to come in during tutorial to make up assignments or to type work for other classes.

ü               Most assignments will be emailed to the teacher throughout the Aptos High web site.  Students will keep a record of all assignments sent to the teacher during the semester as proof that an assignment was sent in on time.

ü               If absent on the day of an exam students will be required to take the test within one week of the missed exam.

Behavioral Expectations

  1. Please be in your seats ready to listen and work when the bell rings.  Running into class, as the bell rings will result in a deduction of 5 participation points.   
  2. Do not write on desks, computers, posters and walls. 
  3. Always ask the teacher when you need permission to leave the room.
  4. Restroom use: Students will be given five restroom passes throughout the semester. After the five passes have been used participation points will be deducted.
  5. The teacher, not the bell, dismisses the class; so the students are to remain in their seats until dismissed by the teacher.
  6. No food, candy, gum, or drinks in the classroom. 
  7. No headsets, hats, shades, or cell phones in the classroom.
  8. Honor your classmates and your teacher.  NO swearing or inappropriate remarks while in class.
  9. Cheating will result in a zero for the assignment and a phone call home to parents.  If you are caught a second time a referral will be given to an Assistant Principal.

Behavioral Consequences

  1. Verbal warning and minus 1 participation point
  2. Removed from area and minus 2 participation points
  3. Detention with teacher and phone call home
  4. Referral to School Discipline Office
  5. Saturday School
  6. Removal from class

Grading policy:

  1. There should never be a question of what your grade is or how you are getting that grade.
  2. Grades are exported to my website at least once a week, if not more often.
  3. It is your responsibility to keep up with your grade.  If you have any questions; please see me before school, break, or after school.



First Quarter Grade: 40% Class work, 40% Quizzes and Tests and 20% Class Participation

 

Second Quarter Grade: 40% Class work, 40% Quizzes and Tests and 20% Class Participation

 

Semester Grade: 40% First Quarter Grade; 40% Second Quarter Grade; and 20% Final Exam Grade
