Course Description/Outline (reflects needed skills)

This semester students will learn keyboarding by touch using correct typing techniques, correct fingering of letter, number, and symbol keys. The course includes an introduction to Windows and an introduction to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Students learn the formatting of letters, memos, and how to correctly format a Modern Language Association research report. Basic e-mail and the Internet will be taught also. Speed development is an important component of the course. A career portfolio is developed at the end of the semester. Computer labs are available for student use before and after school. Difficulty depends upon student’s aptitude. This course fulfills Digital High School proficiencies 1-5, and 7-8.

Textbook: Textbook: Century 21 Keyboarding & Information Processing 6th edition.

Software: Microtype Multimedia and Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

1.                  To help students gain the skills necessary to operate a computer keyboard properly.

2.                  To give students the opportunity to learn how to type the alphabet, numbers and most symbols by touch with speed and accuracy using correct fingering.

3.                  Students will learn the basics of the Microsoft Word Processing program, Excel spreadsheet program and PowerPoint presentation software.

4.                  Creative writing skills will be enhanced as well as grammar skills.

5.                  The above goals will help students become self-directed individuals who can set ambitious and realistic educational, career and personal goals and who can demonstrate responsibility in meeting course expectations

Methods of Assessment (may include tests, portfolios, projects, essays, etc.)

Technique, production work, timed writings; short quizzes, tests and participation will determine the student’s grade.

Methods to accommodate language learners and other target populations

An after school computer lab is available four days a week whereby business teachers have time to work with students. Teachers work one on one in this lab with students who may have difficulty understanding assignments or finishing their work on time.

Class Procedures (missed assignments, make up work assignment format)

ü               Students who need extra time for assignments or review may use the computer lab before school or after school with teacher permission.

ü               Students are always welcome to come in during tutorial to make up assignments or to type work for other classes.

ü               Students have one week to make up missed work without penalties, unless arrangements are made for additional time.  Students can see what they missed by logging onto the website and checking the daily assignments.

ü               Teacher will check files to make sure students are following class rules. 

ü               Most assignments will be emailed to the teacher through the Aptos High website.  Students will keep a record of all assignments sent to the teacher during the semester as proof that the assignment was sent on time.   

ü               It is the student’s responsibility to check the webpage concerning missed assignments.

ü               If absent on the day of an exam/assignment students will be required to take the test or complete assignment within one week.

ü               Late work will be graded at teacher’s convenience. 

ü               Late assignments will not be accepted after the last due date.  Please refer to the assignment schedule located on the website for your class. 

ü               All work must be completed one week before the end of the grading period, unless a deadline has been set for an individual assignment.

Behavioral Expectations (and consequences)

  1. Please be in your seats ready to listen and work when the bell rings.  Running into class, as the bell rings, will result in a deduction of 5 participation points. 
  2. Do not write on desks, computers, posters and walls.
  3. Do not touch or take things that do not belong to you. This includes school property.
  4. Always ask the teacher when you need permission to leave the room.
  5. Restroom use: Students will be given five restroom passes throughout the semester. After the five passes have been used, students will have to make up the missed class time before the next class.
  6. The teacher, not the bell, dismisses the class; so the students are to remain in their seats until dismissed by the teacher.
  7. No food, candy, gum, or drinks in the classroom. 
  8. No headphones or electronic devices (iPods, cell phones) allowed in class.  Hats and shades are to be removed before entering classroom.  
  9. Honor your classmates and your teacher.  NO swearing or inappropriate language in class.
  10. Cheating will result in a zero for the assignment and a phone call home to the parents.  If you are caught a second time a referral will be given to the assistant principal.

Grading policy:

  1. There should never be a question of what your grade is or how you are getting that grade.
  2. Grades are exported to my website at least once a week, if not more often. 
  3. It is your responsibility to keep up with your grade.  If you have any questions;  please see me before school, at break or after school.  


 

First Quarter Grade: 40% Class work, 40% Quizzes and Tests and 20% Class Participation

 

Second Quarter Grade: 40% Class work, 40% Quizzes and Tests and 20% Class Participation

 

Semester Grade: 40% First Quarter Grade; 40% Second Quarter Grade; and 20% Final Exam Grade
