CIF State Cross Country Finals: Aptos boys finish third in Division III

Seniors Amy Schnittger and Walter Mayeda ran top times for Aptos at the California Interscholastic Federation state meet at Woodward Park's 3.1-mile cross country course in Fresno on Saturday.

Schnittger finished in 12th place for the Division III girls race with a time of 18 minutes, 48 seconds in cool, clear conditions, and Mayeda was 13th [16:01] in the boys race

SCCAL boys cross country championship: Hunt, Mariners dominate for third straight team title

Aptos junior Rylan Hunt defended his 2006 SCCAL title, crossing the finish line first in 15 minutes, 17 seconds. Teammate Walter Mayeda was six seconds behind in second, leading a pack of seven Mariners runners who set new personal records at Pinto Lake. Proffitt came in third [15:28] and Brennan Lynch of Santa Cruz was fourth [15:29]. Aptos had six of the top eight finishers.

SCCAL girls cross country championship: Mariners' energy bunny Ferrante breaks away for title

Marissa Ferrante finished the 2.95-mile Pinto Lake course Thursday in 18 minutes and nine seconds, 27 seconds ahead of second place finisher and teammate, Amy Schnittger. The title was the Mariners' third straight team title.

Marissa Ferrante won with a time of 18:36, and Aptos placed second at the CCS Center meet at Crystal Springs.

Aptos finished with 74 points while meet champion Santa Clara had 59 points.

Three other Aptos runners finished in the top ten: Kim McMullen was seventh [19:58], Gina Horath was eighth [20:27] and Jaime Wittwer was ninth [20:42].

With Rylan Hunt leading the way, the Aptos High boys cross country team won the Central Coast Section Center meet at Crystal Springs on Thursday.

Hunt placed first in 15 minutes, 27 seconds on the 2.95-mile course, followed by four other Aptos runners in the top 15. Dayne Gradone was third [15:40], Mich Moriarity was fourth [15:46], Walter Mayeda was sixth [15:50] and James Hudson was 14th [16:38].

"It was a good outing for us," Aptos coach Dan Gruber said. "There was a good crowd of kids, but my guys just led the pack"

Aptos finished with 28 points. Santa Clara was second with 59 points.

SLV's Chris Proffitt set a home-course record, running 2.5 miles in 14 minutes, 29 seconds to place first in the boys race. Still, it wasn't enough to beat a strong Aptos team. The Mariners prevailed 20-35 as the remainder of the top five were all Aptos runners, with Dan Gradone in second at 14:43, Mitch Moriarity in third at 14:50, Ryland Hunt in fourth at 14:53 and Walter Mayeda in fifth at 15:00.

Marissa Ferrante [17:25] of Aptos High claimed another first place, running 17 seconds faster than teammate Amy Schnittger 17:42 on the 2.5-mile SLV course. Their finishes plus two other Aptos runners in the top five propelled the Mariners to victories over SLV [18-37] and St. Francis [15-incomplete], respectively

Aptos beat Harbor 15-48 and beat Scotts Valley 15-64 at Nisene Marks. Harbor beat Scotts Valley 15-46.

Aptos' Rylan Hunt won the 5k race in 16:15, and the top five times were all from Aptos.

Marissa Ferrante was the top runner in the girls' meet, finishing the 5-kilometer race in 19 minutes, 13 seconds. Her Aptos teammate Amy Schnitger was second at 19:40. Haylee Childs was the top Scotts Valley runner, with a 23:23, and Christina Barrientos was the Pirates' best time with a 20:48.

Marissa Ferrante continued her strong season with an individual third-place finish in 18 minutes, 32 seconds, helping lift Aptos into sixth place for the Girls Division III at the Stanford Invitational on Saturday. The Mariners were the top finishers out of Central Coast Section schools for the girls.

Senior Amy Schnittger followed with an 18th place finish [19:17]. Kim McMullen came in 44th [20] and Linnea Biddick finished 49th [20:10]. Jamie Wittmer was 104th [21:18].

Rylan Hunt helped take Aptos to a eighth-place finish with 270 points for the Boys Division III with an individual, 10th-place finish and a time of 16:05. Fellow junior Dayne Gradone followed 10 seconds later to grab 15th place, and teammate Mitch Moriarity came in 42nd [16:59]. James Hudson was 79 [17:34], and Ryan Peabody was 124th [18:08].
