Tutorial Policy
Guidelines:
Tutorials were created out of students'
need to find the time to make up tests and get help from their teachers.
It was also created to give students time to work on their schoolwork.
Tutorial time is academic and educational, not down time.
Students must be engaged in an academic activity. These can include
homework, testing, silent reading, research, quiet reflection, etc. Classroom
discipline rules apply.
It is the teacher's decision as to
whether the tutorial climate should encourage collaborative work, which
is often noisier tnan individual work. One possibility is for departments
to agree on certain classes that will be quieter than others. English,
for example, may have special needs for sustained silent reading tutorials.
Each computer lab on campus shall
be staffed by a teacher, without a regular roster for tutorial. This
ensures appropriate access to computers for students to use. Two
PE teachers will have a non-roster tutorial for PE activity makeups.
Departments can work out internal rotations as needed for specific activities,
labs, or projects that meet facility needs.
Later this year, some tutorial time
will be dedicated to preparing for the SAT 9 tests. For certain low
performing students, this may include reassignment of tutorial for second
semester.
Strategies:
Give sufficient homework/project deadlines on Monday so that kids have
plenty to do on Wednesday and Thursday.
Give out your tutorial invitations/passes on Monday.
Make a "Tutorial Invitation List" (a list that shows who is supposed to
come to tutorial) and check it
Instruct incoming Freshmen during orientation and Link Crew introduction.
Don't give passes for students to go to another class (exception of floating
to computer labs) . Only sign "invitations" from other teachers.
Have a campus wide listing of available specialized tutorials including
silent reading, technology, etc.
Tutorial Do's
-
Quiet Study Time
-
Catch up on missing assignments
-
review before tests
-
confer with teacher about progress and grades
-
make up tests or activities
-
research for ongoing projects
-
silent reading
-
read a newspaper or magazine
-
computer-based activities or research
-
enrichment or extra credit activities for a particular unit
-
career panels, guest speakers, etc.
Tutorial Don'ts
-
listen to discman/walkman (these are not allowed on campus anyway)
-
improve makeup
-
chat rooms or games (these are not allowed anyway)
-
non-instructional movies
-
Hang out /social time
-
have unreasonable tutorial deadlines for students to make up work ..
If a student is absent they have 6 classes to account for. Declaring
that "you must come on Tuesday to make up your work or not at all"
places your class above the rest of a student's schedule. Students
can make up work from absences in class rotation order or in ascending
order of grades.
-
mandatory club or activity meetings without IC clearance
Attendance at Tutorials
-
Students have the first 7 minutes of tutorial to get where their passes
indicate. If a student comes in late, mark the pass "Tardy" or "Cut"
as with any other period and send it down to the attendance office at your
convenience. We will mark the tardy or cut as needed.
