Education Budget Cuts from the State

Diane – Three levels to the discussion:

How will cuts affect the district?

How will cuts affect the campus?

How will cuts affect the site council?

Budget cut brainstorming from AHS Site Council mtng on Mon, Feb 27, 2008

(in no particular order, no consensus)

·         Cut alternative schools

·         Offer early retirement incentives “golden handshake”

·         Sell off district-owned property

·         Combine alt ed sites then sell or rent out the site

·         Raise buss pass cost; consolidate bus routes

·         Cut subs and have admin cover classes

·         Cut top end admin:  zone asst sups, deputy supt

·         Eliminate overlap of count office of ed functions

·         Look at Towers lease for cheaper alternative

·         Re-look at health benefits

·         Look at alternative sources of income

·         Look at calendar changes.  Does four days cost less than five?  Year round?

·         Cut PE

·         Count athletics as PE credit

·         Reduce grad credit requirements

·         Salary cut across the board 4% of $177M = $6M which is half what is need to cut

·         Take rest from transportation

·         Get rid of GATE

·         Cut AP program and take those classes only at junior college

VPA grant approval

Veronique Marks, VPA dept chair, asked for site council approval to spend remaining $9,000 in block grant on expanding digital cameras and equipment.  Start of equipment was already approved with other grants

PE grant approval

Sherry Platero sent paperwork with asst prin Steve Pegg to approve $800 sound system for new wrestling room to replace the $4K one denied earlier
