College Admissions Testing

PSAT

The PSAT is Saturday, October 17. The purpose in taking the PSAT is that it provides excellent practice, the score report give specific suggestions on how to improve skills and, if taken as a junior, can qualify one as a National Merit Scholar which is a scholarship program. All college-bound Juniors should take the PSAT, and then pick up the test booklet in December from his or her counselor to determine strengths and weaknesses for future testing. Sign up to take the PSAT by October 7 in the main office on the AHS campus. The cost is $20.00.

When to Take College Admissions Tests

The recommendation is that students take the SAT 1 Reasoning Test, or the ACT + Writing, one or two times in the spring of the Junior year. It may be taken again in the fall of the Senior year. Colleges frown upon taking the SAT more than 3 times.

The SAT II should be taken as soon as a student completes a course in the subject area in which he or she will take the exam. (Example: a student taking Biology as a Freshman, should take the SAT II in Biology in May or June of Freshman year. Students should take the SAT II Subject test that he or she will score highest on, regardless of the major he or she plans to apply to.

Students enrolled in AP Spanish classes should take the Spanish Listening Subject Test, which is only offered in November.

Counselors Update:

·       Presentations were made in the Junior US History classes, and the Senior Government and Econ classes to help students understand their transcripts and to go over the options available after high school

·       All juniors received a booklet entitled Career and College Planning.  This is an excellent resource and we encourage you to look through it with your student.

·       Counselors invited parents to the campus by grade level and gave presentations regarding services available and updates on graduation and college entrance requirements.

·       Counselors have been calling in students this month based on current data (including their class ranking, progress report grades, and standardized test scores) to offer interventions, remediation opportunities, and post secondary guidance.

·       Counselors have contacted Junior & Senior students who have not scored a 335 or higher on either the MATH or the LANGUAGE ARTS portions of the High School Exit Exam and assisted them in accessing academic support through the Extended Learning Program..
