I COURSE DESCRIPTION/Outline ( reflects needed skills )
This is an introductory art class that serves as a prerequisite for all the advanced art classes offered by the Visual Arts Department.
It is designed to teach developmental drawing (sketching, still life, perspective, and composition); color & design (Brewster's color theory); three-dimensional design (create 3-D forms in various media); life drawing; and commercial art (technical skills in lettering & layout). Art history and appreciation (including cultural awareness of art forms) are also presented in this year- long course. The first semester covers drawing and the second semester covers color, 3-D design, and commercial art. Art history is included during both semesters.
This class meets the Fine Arts/Foreign Language graduation requirement for Aptos High School and the California State University fine arts requirement. Combined with an advanced art class, it meets the 'f' requirement in Fine Arts for the University of California.

III MATERIALS REQUIRED
1. Students should bring pencils to class: #2, HB or B drawing pencils if possible; magic rub eraser, pink or green eraser combination lock (G118).
2. MATERIALS FEE: $15.00 for consumable materials such as sketchbook, charcoal, paints, glue, etc.
3. Students must bring sketchbook on due date.
IV GOALS ( knowledge to be acquired, technical skills, etc., ESLRs must be referenced, standards alignment )
1. To have a positive experience in the art class, the students should: respect the projects made by himself/herself and those of others; respect the school's equipment; respect the teacher, other students and the classroom by being polite, positive, and contributing to class cleanup. (ESLR C, D, E).
2. The students will be able to explain or demonstrate:
a. the perceptual skills of drawing
b. the principles and elements of composition
c. an understanding of craftsmanship and presentation of work
d. creative problem solving

f. basic drawing techniques

V UNITS OF STUDY ( activities )
1. Contour line drawing, sketching, still life drawing, multimedia drawing
2. Drawing using positive-negative space
3. Value scale and value drawing
4. Perspective drawing
5. Color wheel and color schemes using water color
6. 3-D forms using various media (plaster, clay, paper mache, soap, etc.)
7. Life drawing–drawing parts of the human figure, final drawing of entire form,
8. Lettering and other commercial art techniques
9. Art history time-line and computer research
VI METHODS OF ASSESSMENT ( may include tests, portfolios, projects, essays, etc .)
1. Pop quizzes on notes and class text
2. Drawing instructor's weekly evaluation of student sketchbook/ portfolio assignments
3. Student critiques and class discussions on assignments
4. Drawing projects
5. Student portfolio of semester course work
6. Quarter tests and semester final exam
VII GRADING POLICY
Projects, tests, participation/attendance………….60%
Homework (sketch book), citizenship, clean up...40%
VIII CLASS PROCEDURES ( missed assignments, make up work assignment format )
Daily participation is mandatory. If students miss their work, it should be made up at the earliest time. It is the students' responsibility to find out what was missed and turn in the work in a timely fashion. If a student misses studio work, it can be made up either during tutorial or at lunch. If a project is lost or destroyed, it should be replaced. Students need to put a legible name and period on the bottom of all art work. The school policies will be followed for tardies and absences.
IX BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS ( and consequences )
1. Be in your seat by the 2nd bell
2. Respect all students regardless of race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, etc.
3. Follow the school rules of conduct
4. Don't bring electronic devices to class
5. Respect any tools, machines, or other equipment in the classroom; do not touch them unless otherwise instructed;
6. Do not throw, clay tools, paper, etc. in class
7. Do not use foul language in class.
CONSEQUENCES: The usual order of consequences is: warning, detention, call home, referral, behavior contract, parent conference, removal from class. However, it the offence is severe, then dire consequences will follow. |
