Course Description

 

5410 Beginning Foods

Prerequisite:  None

Grade Level:  9-12

  Semester

This is a skill-oriented course designed to provide firsthand experience in basic food preparation.  There are a variety of informative, non-cooking lessons combined with the cooking labs.  Working in groups of 4-10, the students will be challenged to read and follow directions, communicate with others, learn and improve mathematics and measuring skills, practice written expression, and make responsible decisions.  The majority of study units focus on healthy eating habits, and lessons are geared to help students improve their organizational skills.  Students will be able to prepare a wide variety of foods, which taste good while applying different culinary techniques.   Two web-based projects are required . Million word challenge is also incorporated into the curriculum.  A materials fee is requested.
