Dear Mariner Parents/Guardians,

Aptos High School is preparing for the WASC 6-year self-study. For those of you not familiar with the process of accreditation, our school is certified by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, or WASC for short. WASC is an association that ensures that schools meet various standards in all aspects of running a school.

The self-study revolves around an in-depth gathering of data and information that will help our school take an analytical look at:

1. Critical student learning needs
2.  School-wide learner outcomes
3.  Academic standards
4.  Effectiveness of programs and operations, and their impact on student learning.

It is important the school receives feedback from all stakeholders, including parents/guardians. Your participation in completing the Parent/Guardian WASC Survey is appreciated. Please plan to complete this survey in one sitting. It will take about 15-20 minutes. All responses will remain confidential. Thank you for taking the time to answer this carefully and honestly. We value your responses and thank you in advance.

Sincerely,

AHS Administration and Staff

Greetings Mariner Parents,

The amount of technology upgrades at Aptos High School over the past 8 years have been impressive.

A partial list of improvements include:

  • Distribution of Chromebook carts in every classroom
  • Distribution of Chromebooks/Laptops to each teacher for instruction
  • Installation of 70" TV/Teacher amplification system/document camera in every classroom
  • Upgraded network with a robust school Wi-Fi to accommodate additional wireless devices.
  • Tech upgrades to the newly renovated Library Learning Lab
  • Instructional software licensing and availability to all students
  • Voice Over Internet (VoIP) phones
  • A full-time site technician
  • ... and more

In order to continue receiving and distributing technology funds to build advanced 21st Century “Intelligent Classrooms” at Aptos High School and throughout the district, we need input from all stakeholders. Please take a few minutes to complete the Bright Bytes Technology Survey detailing the current use of technology within the Aptos High School community.

Please click the 10 minute:  Bright Bytes Parent Survey

The survey will close Friday, October 6th.

Thank you very much for your honest, helpful responses.

Sincerely,

Good Evening Mariner Families,

Last week the guidance team made adjustments to tutorial class rosters. The teachers, guidance counselors, and administration thought it  would be best for students to have a tutorial teacher that also teaches one of their other classes. Starting tomorrow (9/13), your student may have a different tutorial teacher than before. A list of the new tutorial assignments were shared with the students today. Lists of the new tutorial assignments are also posted on the following buildings:

  • Main Office - 9th grade tutorial list

  • Cafeteria -  10th grade tutorial list

  • Warmerdam Gym - 11th grade tutorial list

  • I-Building - 12th grade tutorial list

Assigned tutorial classes can also be found on student and parent SchoolLoop accounts.

Please talk with your student tonight about possible Tutorial class changes starting tomorrow.

Thanks and have a great evening.

Student Schedules

Welcome Back Students and Parents,

The following is to inform you on the processes for requesting a student schedule change.

Requests for schedule change:

If you wish to request a schedule change, please submit a Request for Schedule Change form in the Guidance office. Counselors will call students to the office in the order in which Request for Schedule Change forms were submitted. If you have already submitted a course change request, there is no need to resubmit.  Please note that schedule change requests are only processed with a completed Request for Schedule Change form.

Only students with “gaps” in their schedules report to the office during that period:

During the first few days of school counselors will be primarily focused on seeing students who have unscheduled periods (what we call having “a gap” in your schedule). So if you do not have a class on your schedule for any particular period, go to the guidance office that period.

Schedules subject to change:

Please note that all students’ schedules are subject to change. Some classes may be impacted or over-enrolled. Counselors therefore will be balancing classes by removing students from overloaded classes, and adding students to less impacted classes, giving priority to students who have best met the recommended placement criteria, students who are closest to graduation, and students whose schedules least permit change.

For additional information related to schedule changes, please contact your guidance counselor.

Thank you,

Ben Slyder

Mindfulness:

Presence and Awareness
Starting off a new school year can be challenging to switch from our too-short summer mode back to being organized and ready for classes, activities, clubs, or whatever else we're supposed to do and wanting to do.  Some of us can feel the pressure of all we now have on our plates.

In our busy world, our minds and bodies can respond to these changes and stress.  We may have a hard time slowing down for much needed resting moments. It is also easy to get stuck thinking about things in the past or the future, while forgetting to focus on the present here and now.

The benefits of mindfulness for children, teens, and adults are numerous, including increased health benefits, decreased stress, and increased resilience.

Mindfulness itself is a challenge to define, and it can be a challenge to get started. Some say mindfulness is not hard nor easy, but remembering to be mindful can be difficult especially when first attempting to establish the habit. Simply put, mindfulness is bringing our awareness to the present moment without judgement.  It can be practiced while being still or by mindful movements. There's a lot a great mindfulness information out there to help us out. To get started, click on the links below.

Hello Caring Families and Students,

While the school year is coming to a close, this does not impact when students might benefit from counseling support.  The counseling agencies that provide onsite services at our school such as PVPSA are full and/or are closed for onsite referrals for the school year..

For students or families who are seeking counseling, the best way for them to get those services will be for them to see counselors off campus at the counselors’ offices. Here are some agencies accepting new counseling clients with Medi-cal or may offer a sliding payment scale:

 The Parent Center

Spanish speaking counselors have a waitlist

English speaking counselors do not have a waitlist

Dear 10th Grade Families,

On April 12 all sophomores will be taking the the new California Science Test; also known as the CAST.  This new computer-based assessment is being piloted this year throughout California and is designed to assess students on the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).  Although students should do their best on the assessment, they should not stress over the assessment. In our planning for the CAST assessment, we thought it would be best to have the 10th graders take the CAST at the same time the 11th graders take the SBAC assessment. This will minimize disruption to instructional time since the whole school will be on a special bell schedule to accommodate testing for the Juniors. Attached to this email is a copy of the SBAC/CAST bell schedule for the week of April 10. For additional information on the California Science Test and the Next Generation Science Standards please visit the following websites:

Good evening, Mariners!

It’s finally here!  Our Valencia mini-Mariners will start at Aptos High tomorrow! We have been working hard to ensure a smooth start for the Valencia students, families, and staff and to minimize disruptions for the Aptos High community. Regarding drop-off and pick-ups I have some helpful information.

Valencia’s school day at AHS is 8:15-2:30. In order to limit the disruption to our arrival and pick up schedule, we are instructing the Valencia parents to drop off their children between 8:00-8:15 and to arrive for pick-up between 2:15-2:30.

To create a smooth flow of traffic on campus, drop-off and pick-up should happen as close to your student’s start & end time as possible.  Attached to this news item, you will find the drop-off/pick-up maps we have provided to the Valencia families.  In order to accommodate for 30 additional staff, we have designated additional staff parking in the upper lot. Please know that we are all doing our part to support the full Aptos community.  I am humbled by the loving support our Mariner community has extended to the Valencia students, staff, and families.  We’re looking forward to Wednesday & our mini-Mariners!

Good Evening 10th Grade Families,

Please complete the course request form your student received earlier this week by Friday, 2/3.  Students will turn in the form to their counselor during their English class on Friday 2/3. Remember the plan is to have your student input their course requests into the online system during their English class.  Your student will not be able input their course requests into the online system if they do not have their completed and parent signed course request form.  The course request presentation is attached to this email for your review.

Thank you and have a great evening.

Dear 10th Grade Families,

Aptos High School counselors presented information to your 10th grade students about the course request process in their English 2 classes on Tuesday,  1/31/17.  The presentation was an overview of the process to choose classes for junior year.  Among other things, your student received a personalized course request form (Green) in which his/her counselor made suggestions regarding which courses your child should take next year.  Please be sure to consult those suggestions in working with your student to make requests for next year.  Throughout the presentations, your students asked great questions and were truly engaged.  Go Mariners!

Previously, you received detailed information regarding the course request process; however, a few reminders may be helpful.  In addition to these reminders, you will also find the presentation we used on Tuesday attached.  You may find reviewing the presentation helpful as you guide your child in requesting courses for the junior year.

Important dates/reminders:

  • 1/31—classroom presentations
  • 2/1, Wednesday—student/parent drop-in with guidance counselor:  3:00-7:00pm, Main Office
  • 2/1 & 2/2, Wednesday & Thursday—student drop-in with guidance counselor:  Break, lunch, & after-school (Main Office)
  • 2/3, Friday—Parent/guardian signed, course request form COMPLETED and ready to use with the counselor in English 2 classes (THIS IS A CRITICAL DUE DATE!)

Sincerely,

The Aptos High Guidance Department

On Wednesday, January 25th, Aptos High hosted an Advanced Placement (AP) Information Night.  We began our course request process for 2017-18 in 9th grade classes on January 24th and will continue through 10th & 11th grades in the following weeks.  When making course request choices for next year, we want all students and their families to have as much information as possible.  The choice a student makes regarding taking AP courses is an important family decision.  We had a great turnout in the PAC—thank you to all who participated!  Please find our presentation attached.

Final exams for the first semester are coming soon!  See the attached bell schedules for Fall Finals weeks.  Students should be prepared for this important aspect of their courses by staying caught up with current assignments and spending quality time studying for their finals.  Finals can be weighted up to 20% of the grade in their courses so preparing sufficiently and being sure students are here for their finals is critical.

Families are encouraged not to leave town early for trips etc that will result in students missing finals.  Parents and students should understand that no final exams will be given early (before the scheduled date for that course) for any student.  Giving finals early jeopardizes the confidentiality of the content on the final and rewards students/families for missing finals due to vacations and other reasons.   Students who miss the final will be assigned a failing grade (not incomplete) for the missed exam and that will be factored into the semester average.

Teachers are required to provide a reasonable opportunity for the student to make up the exam when they return and then change the grade accordingly when they’ve completed the final.  This must be done within the first ten days of the following semester (unless the student is Migrant and has completed a Migrant Student Final Exam contract with their teacher).  Students who have no other option but to miss the final are encouraged to inform their teacher of this as soon as possible so that a plan to make up the exam can be put into place.
