Dear Students, Staff, and Parents of Aptos High:
We are in the process of re-identifying the two cafeteria bathrooms as gender-neutral student bathrooms on our campus. As you may have questions regarding this addition, we have included information to help you better understand this change on campus.
The gender-neutral bathrooms are being added because California law AB1266 has determined that bathrooms for students of all genders must be provided on school campus. These laws were the result of transgendered and gender non-conforming students reporting that they were not comfortable or they felt unsafe using bathrooms designed “Boys” or “Girls.” Many of these students were subjected to discrimination, harassment, violence and/or lawsuits for using their bathrooms that did not fit their gender at birth.
Our two gender-neutral bathrooms are designed for all people to use-- male, female, trans or gender non-conforming, gender queer, or gender-neutral. People who choose the gender-neutral bathrooms may do so without anyone’s assumption about their gender identity or preference and without ridicule. Students will continue to have the choice of 5 bathrooms designated “boys” and “girls.”
Though perhaps new to many people, these gender neutral bathrooms are being made available to ensure compassion, safety and privacy for all in an equitable school climate. I want to thank the AHS Rainbow Alliance Club for their advocacy and work on this important implementation of AB 1266 at Aptos High School.
Feel free to contact us if you have questions or see our AB 1266 FAQ .
