1) Preparation- being prepared for your competition means having your entire equipment ready and close. Checking the tides and swells so you have a good understanding of what the ocean and waves are doing throughout the day. Making sure you have had a good breakfast and snacks to keep your energy up if your going to be surfing all day. These seemingly small things will allow you to focus on your heat instead of trying to find your leash or running to buy some food. It will also give you the advangtage of having a better understanding of what the waves might be doing so you can come up with a strategy.
2.) Strategy- having a strategy or game plan is very important. It is beneficial to even have a plan b and c. This way if the tide gets to high you would go to your plan b and paddle in and ride the inside ect.
3.) Confidence/equipment- these two go hand in hand. If you're loving your board your're going to be more confident. If you're feeling fresh and strong and geel you can paddle faster then your competitor your goign to be more confidant. Try and fine-tune your equipment in advance to your competition that way you know how your board is going to ride and your not testing out new equipment or someone else's board in your heat. Once you are prepared, rested, and knkow your equipment you are going to do much better and your results are going to show.
