State Testing 2017 -- CAASPP/SBAC

Dear Mariner Families,

Our teachers and staff have been working diligently to implement California’s Common Core Standards (CCSS) in AHS classrooms. The effort is an ambitious remodeling of our education system, intended to help all students graduate ready to handle college-level work and 21st-century jobs. All of us are proud of the impact that this effort is having on our students’ learning every day.

Of course the state of California and the faculty at AHS are anxious to see how our students are performing. The student achievement data will allow us to see our students’ progress in learning the CCSS standards and will also allow us to set goals for ourselves. The updated standards call for a different measure of progress than the previous end-of-year assessments. The related CAASPP/SBAC assessments use technology to offer adaptive tests that can accommodate a wide range of students with diverse learning backgrounds. They also allow us to check if students are learning the skills we are teaching.

At Aptos High School, testing in English Language Arts will begin on April 11 and end on April 12 and testing in Math will begin on April 12 and end on April 13. Teachers, administrators and parents will be the only ones that receive their individual student’s scores. Aptos High School will communicate with students and parents when scores are available.

For 11th grade students, the CAASPP/SBAC assessment will indicate whether they are college ready in English and in Math and may enable them to by-pass the requirement to take entrance exams or complete remedial course work at all CSU’s and at Cabrillo College before taking “transferable” English or Math courses. Therefore, it is very important that the 11th graders taking the SBAC this year do the best job they can.

If you have any questions about our California State Standards or the assessments please write to [email protected] or [email protected]

To get a sense of what the SBAC tests will be like, you and your student can view the PRACTICE TEST online at the California Department of Education (CDE) webpage.
