Excellent Essay

The essay is unified and sticks to the main point.  The thesis statement is clearly stated.

The main point has at least three supporting examples.  The author uses quotes and evidence from text to back up main points.

The essay is well organized.  The author utilizes transitions between paragraphs.

There are little to no grammatical errors, the sentences flow nicely and are written in a coherent manner.

Average Essay

The essay is generally unified but will sometimes stray from the main topic.  There is a thesis statement.

There are two three supporting examples but they might not all be strong.  Author uses some quotes and evidence.

The essay is slightly unorganized.  There are some transitions between paragraphs.

There are some grammatical errors.  A few sentences may be choppy.

Poor Essay

The essay is very hard to follow and often strays from the main topic.  There is no thesis statement.

The essay is lacking supporting examples.  Author hardly or never uses quotes and evidence is lacking.

The essay is not organized.  There are no transitions between paragraphs

The essay contains many of the following: run-ons, fragments, irregular verbs, subject-verb agreement, misplaced or dangling modifiers, confused words, misspelled words, faulty parallelism, slang, or contractions
