Film Appreciation Course Description: This class is an overview of the
various types of films that have been identified as important components of
the art of cinema. The class will be exposed to both the artistic and technical
aspects of classic and contemporary film. All aspects of production and
technical contributions will be examined and incorporated into the viewing of
the selected films. Various genres of films
will be studied to include: silent, early black and white, musicals, film
noir, westerns, suspense, historical epics, comedy, foreign, science fiction,
documentary, along with any current releases that will contribute to the
understanding of the art of film. Major directors, studios, actors, and
actresses and their contributions to the industry will also be included in
the course of study. The American Film Institute's "Top 100 Films"
list wll be used as the source for films to be viewed by the class or
selected for extra credit/independent viewing assignments. Course Requirements: Students will be expected to use
both written and verbal skills to discuss, critique, and analyze selected
films both in class and for independent assignments. The class will be
presented in lecture format, small group and whole class discussion,
individual and group projects/reports, homework assignments, and a semester
project. Students will be required to keep a class journal that will be
collected and graded monthly. Grading Policy: Semester and quarter grades will
be determined using the following scale:
All students
must be present for and complete a semester final exam. All missed work from
EXCUSED absences must be made up within 5 school days upon return to class. Other missed work can be completed
and turned in late for partial credit. Missed film viewing can be made up
during tutorial when possible or an alternative assignment will be given.
Million Word Challenge assignment will be met by outside readings to include:
screen plays, biographies, and current events in the Film Industry Classroom Management
Policy: Each
student is expected to be responsible for maintaining his or her behavior to
allow for a productive, respectful, tolerant, and safe learning environment.
Any issues regarding this area will be handled through student-teacher
conference, teacher-parent contact, or administrative referral. Students who
are tardy to class 5 times in a quarter will be referred to administration.
Students with chronic tardy problems wil be dealt with through conferences,
after school teacher detention, and/or parent contact. "R"-Rated
Movie Policy:
Parents will be given written notification when the class will be viewing an
"R"-rated movie. Alternative assignments will be made available for
those students who are unable to view the film. |
