I. COURSE DESCRIPTION/OUTLINE

Beginning Physical Education is a one-year core program required for all 9th graders. Students will be exposed to a variety of activities and skills with an emphasis on fitness. This class is designed to motivate and enhance the interest of every student at Aptos High School. Students will begin the course with a solid fitness unit and complete it with the California State required fitness tests. Periodic fitness tests will be incorporated into the program to monitor measurable fitness improvement. Other activities may include: Fitness for Life, court and field activities, track and field, swimming, and dance.

Students are expected to agree to and follow all Physical Education Department policy and rules. This class is a prerequisite and must be passed in order to take Advanced Physical Education.

In order to help assist Aptos High School students better prepare for the mandatory High School Exit Exam, they will also be exposed to activities that address language and math standards. Examples of these activities include written fitness exams and calculations of target heart rates.

By meeting the standards and expectations of Aptos High School, students will achieve greater self-esteem and confidence, help create a healthy and fit lifestyle, and enjoy a safe experience in their Physical Education class. Physical Education class provides an opportunity for all students to be successful. English language learners and students with special needs are given an environment to excel in the physical arena. Students who perform at an exceptionally high level may be recognized by their teacher and rewarded with a free Excellence in Physical Education shirt at the end of the year.

II. MATERIALS

MATERIALS REQUIRED

1. Dress Requirements: All students are expected to follow the Aptos High School dress code at all times. The required dress for class consists of an Aptos Mariners PE shirt, navy blue shorts or navy blue sweat pants and non-marking and non-cleated athletic shoes and socks. Students must provide their own swimsuit and towel during the swim unit. Team uniforms are not accepted as a substitute for any PE class. Costs for the uniforms are:

PE Shirt $8.00

PE Shorts $8.00

PE Sweat pants $20.00

2. Dress Requirements during locker room renovations: Locker rooms are currently under construction and should be available for use at the end of September. Until the locker rooms are ready, dressing out for PE will include the following requirements:

a. Students must wear appropriate shoes that allow them to fully participate in their class: non-marking athletic shoes must be worn in the gym, close-toed shoes must be worn in the weight room, and appropriate athletic shoes must be worn for outside activities.

b. Clothing must not restrict participation in any way. For example, dresses and sagging pants are unacceptable because they may restrict the student from being able to fully participate in class activity.

Infarctions of these rules will result in a non-suit and disciplinary action by the teacher will take place.

MATERIALS PROVIDED

1. Athletic Equipment: All activity supplies and textbooks will be provided. Students wishing to use their own athletic equipment, use it at their own risk, and must first get the approval of their PE teacher.

2. PE Lockers: All students will be assigned a locker to store their PE clothes. Large lockers to store their school clothes and backpacks are for use during PE class only. Students must provide their own combination lock. Combinations and lockers are not to be shared.

3. Videos and Text Books: The class textbook is “Fit For Life” by Corbin and Lindsey. Teacher-made videos of activities may be used, along with supplementary videos such as,“ Ti Bo” by Billy Blanks.

III. GOALS: Class goals are in reference to ESL’s (Expected Schooled Learning Results), ELDERS (Expected Departmental Learning Results), and Physical Education Framework for California Public Schools.

1. Acceptable levels of cardiovascular fitness will be achieved and maintained by students. Students will be able to:

a. Reach or maintain a healthy fitness zone (Fitnessgram tests, F.I.T. Formula)

b. Recognize the importance of fitness and health (Fit For Life)

c. Formulate methods for a lifetime fitness program (Fit For Life)

d. Participate in creative and motivating activities with a minimum of 40% related to total fitness.

2. Every student will develop basic physical skills that will allow personal fulfillment in the use of leisure time (40% movement skills).

a. Demonstrate basic motor skills in a large variety of required activities.

b. Develop skills to transfer to lifetime activities.

3. Every student will develop skills to help problem solve and manage behavior (20% social activities)

IV. UNIT OF STUDY:

1. Core Activities:

Beginning PE will focus on a core group of activities designed to elevate students’ fitness and enhance their interest in physical education. These activities may include, but are not limited to:

a. Fitness e. Self-defense

b. Track and field f. Aerobics

c. Court and Field activities g. Dance

d. Swimming h. Fit for Life

2. Physical Fitness tests:

Tests will be administered throughout this class to monitor fitness levels and meet California State requirements. A pre-assessment will be conducted at the beginning of the year to help monitor improvement in fitness throughout the year.

V. METHODS OF ASSESSMENT

1. 40% motor development (participation, individual improvement, teamwork, written and practical skills test)

2. 40% fitness and WELLNESS (improved fitness scores, participation)

3. 20% social skills (good attendance, promptness, dress for class, leadership, attitude, achievement, and the spirit of teamwork and respect)

4. Final exams will include a fitness test and activities test.

VI. GRADING POLICY

1. Grades will be based on a point system. Successful students will attend class regularly, come to class on time, participate in class and do all assigned work. Points are awarded every day of class.

2. Student’s grades are based on a cumulative point total throughout the entire semester.

3. Grades: percent of total points possible A=90-100%, B=80-89% C=70-79% D= 60-69%, F = <60%

VII. CLASS PROCEDURES

1. Absences or excused non-participation:

Students do not receive their daily points when they are absent or do not participate in class. Only excused, non-participation, and excused or suspended absences can be made-up. Students can make up their absences by attending tutorial. Students must dress out in order to make-up their missed points. If their absence is accompanied by a doctor’s note, the student does not need to make up the points.

2. Extra Credit:

Extra credit may be given at the discretion of the teacher.

3.Non-Suit Policy:

Students are required to dress for class everyday unless informed otherwise by their teacher. The proper attire shall consist of a properly labeled gray Aptos P.E. shirt, navy blue shorts or navy blue sweat pants. Athletic shoes are required at all times. They must be non-marking and without cleats. There are no substitutes for this uniform such as athletic team uniforms or cheer uniforms. Students cannot make-up a non-suit and points will be lost. The student may borrow clothing from the PE Department with a student I.D. card. The clothes must be returned the same day. Students may borrow loaner clothes with a valid student ID card. Failure to dress in appropriate attire will result in disciplinary action by the teacher, and or school administrator. The disciplinary action steps are as follows:

a. One non-suit per quarter may be excused from disciplinary action at the discretion of the instructor.

b. Following the first non-suit, points will be lost and all non-suits thereafter will be followed by a detention with his or her teacher. The date and duration of the detention will be at the discretion of the instructor.

c. If the student fails to report to detention as assigned, they may receive a referral to the discipline office.

4. Locker rooms:

There will be a teacher in the locker room at the beginning and end of each period. Students are not allowed in the locker room without the supervision of a teacher. Locker rooms will be locked during class. Only students dressing are allowed in the locker rooms. Showering is encouraged for all classes, but only required before entering the swimming pool.

5. Supervision areas:

At the end of class all students are to remain in the PE area behind the Blue Mariner line until the passing bell rings.

VIII. BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS

Social skills are a requirement in this class. By following the rules and meeting our expectations, students will achieve greater self-esteem and confidence, a healthy and fit lifestyle, and a fun, friendly, and safe experience in their Physical Education class. Classroom rules will be given in every area of activities. Other infractions of the rules are:

-non-participation -non-suits -leaving before the passing bell

-unexcused tardy -swearing - inappropriate behavior

-unexcused absence -food,drinks, gum -disrespecting people or property
