I. COURSE DESCRIPTION/OUTLINE

Beginning Physical Education is a one-year core program required for all 9th graders. Students will be exposed to a variety of activities and skills with an emphasis on fitness.   This class is designed to motivate and enhance each student’s interest in physical education.  Students will begin the course with a solid fitness unit and complete it with the California State required fitness tests.  Periodic fitness tests will be incorporated into the program to monitor measurable fitness improvement.  Units during the year are geared towards learning motor skills and rules of a variety of sports and activities.             

            Students are expected to agree to and follow all Physical Education Department policy and rules.   This class is a prerequisite and must be passed in order to take Advanced Physical Education.

            In order to help assist Aptos High School students better prepare for the mandatory High School Exit Exam, they will also be exposed to activities that address language and math standards.  Examples of these activities include written fitness exams and calculations of target heart rates.  The Million Word Challenge, a program designed to get students to read 1 million words throughout the school year, will also be incorporated into the class.  Students will be assigned to read a book of their choice and to complete a short book report.

            By meeting the standards and expectations of Aptos High School, students will achieve greater self-esteem and confidence, learn to create and maintain a healthy and fit lifestyle, and enjoy a safe experience in their Physical Education class.  Physical Education class provides an opportunity for all students to be successful.  English language learners and students with special needs are given an environment to excel in the physical arena. Students who perform at an exceptionally high level may be recognized by their teacher and rewarded with a free “Excellence in Physical Education” t-shirt.

 

II. MATERIALS

 

MATERIALS REQUIRED

1.      Dress Requirements: The required dress for class consists of an Aptos Mariners PE shirt, navy blue shorts or navy blue sweat pants. Non-marking and non-cleated athletic shoes are also required at all times.  Students must provide their own swimsuit and towel during the swim unit. 

2.      Costs for the uniforms are:

PE Shirt     $9.00

PE Shorts  $9.00

PE Sweat pants   $22.00

 

MATERIALS PROVIDED

1. Athletic Equipment: All activity supplies and testing materials will be provided.  Students wishing to use their own athletic equipment, use it at their own risk, and must first get the approval of their PE teacher. 

 

 

 

2. PE Lockers: All students will be assigned a locker to store their PE clothes.  Large lockers to store their school clothes and backpacks are for use during PE class only. Students must provide their own combination lock and must use only their assigned lockers.  Combinations and lockers are not to be shared.  To avoid theft, always put all your personal belongings in your locker and lock your locker!!!!!!!

 

3. Text Books: The class textbook is “Fit For Life” by Corbin and Lindsey. 

 

III. GOALS: Class goals are in reference to ESLR’s (Expected Schooled Learning Results) and Physical Education Framework for California Public Schools.

 

1.  Acceptable levels of cardiovascular fitness will be achieved and maintained by students.  Students will be able to:

a.      Reach or maintain a healthy fitness zone.

b.      Recognize the importance of fitness and health

c.      Formulate methods for a lifetime fitness program

2.  Every student will develop basic physical skills that will allow personal fulfillment in the use of leisure time.

a.      Demonstrate basic motor skills in a large variety of required activities.

b.      Develop skills to transfer to lifetime activities.

3.  Every student will develop skills to help problem solve and manage behavior.

 

IV. UNIT OF STUDY:

1. Core Activities:

Beginning PE will focus on a core group of activities designed to elevate students’ fitness and enhance their interest in physical education.  These activities may include, but are not limited to:  Court and Field activities (Volleyball, Badminton, Softball, Soccer, Softball, Field Hockey, Flag Football, Pickleball, etc.), Swimming, Dance, Fitness, and Track and Field.                                      

 2. Physical Fitness tests:

Tests will be administered throughout this class to monitor fitness levels and meet California State requirements.  A pre-assessment will be conducted at the beginning of the year to help monitor improvement in fitness throughout the year.   Final Fitness Gram tests will be administered in the spring.

 

V. METHODS OF ASSESSMENT

1.      40% motor development (participation, individual improvement)

2.      20% social skills (good attendance, promptness, dress for class, leadership, attitude, achievement, teamwork and respect)

3.      20% cardiovascular fitness (timed runs: improvement and fitness levels)

4.      20% tests (fitness, written, activity)

 

VI. GRADING POLICY

1.  Grades will be based on a point system.  Successful students will attend class regularly, come to class on time, dress out, participate in sport and fitness activities, demonstrate appropriate behavior, and do all assigned work.  Each day is worth 10 points with block days worth 20 points.

2. Student’s quarter grades are based on a cumulative point total throughout the quarter with emphasis on the weighted percents mentioned in Section V.

A=90-100%, B=80-89% C=70-79% D= 60-69%, F = <60%.

3. Semester grades are calculated using the following percents:

1st Quarter: 45%

2nd Quarter: 45%

Final Exam: 10%

4. Final exams will include a written test and a fitness test. 

 

VII. CLASS PROCEDURES

1.  Absences or excused non-participation:

Students do not receive their daily points when they are absent or do not participate in class.  Only excused, non-participation, and excused or suspended absences can be made up.  Students can make up their absences by attending tutorial.  Students must dress out for tutorial.  If the student is injured or sick and cannot fully participate in PE, he or she must bring a doctor’s note explaining which activities they cannot do and when they will return to full activity.  These students will still be expected to suit up and do any and all activities that the doctor deems acceptable.   If a student goes on a trip, he or she can complete a travel log to make up their missed participation points.  These students will need to make up any runs and written tests that were missed when they recover or return.

 

2. Non-Suit Policy:

Students are required to dress for class everyday. Students cannot make up a non-suit and points will be lost.  The student may borrow loaner clothes from the PE Department once a month.  Failure to dress in appropriate attire will result in disciplinary action by the teacher and/or school administrator.

 

3. Locker rooms:

There will be a teacher in the locker room at the beginning and end of each period.  Students are not allowed in the locker room without the supervision of a teacher.  Locker rooms will be locked during class. The PE Dept is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

 

4.  Supervision areas:

At the end of class all students are to remain in the PE area behind the blue Mariner line until the passing bell rings.

 

VIII.  BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS

Appropriate social skills and behavior are a requirement in PE class.  Although additional classroom rules will be given with each activity, general infarctions of the rules are as follows: non-participation, non-suits, leaving before the bell, swearing, unexcused tardy or absence, cheating, and disrespecting people or property.  In addition to point deductions, disciplinary steps for breaking behavior rules are as follows:

           a.     One on one conference with the teacher

           b.     Phone call home

c.       Referral to office
