Course Description/Outline (reflects needed skills)

   Spanish Language AP prepares students for the AP Spanish Language Examination, and all students entering the course will be expected to take it. Any student who does not take the AP exam will have their grade reduced (an “A” becomes a “B”, etc.). Students refine, perfect, and enhance their speaking, writing, reading, and understanding of Spanish, so it is assumed that they have already learned these skills. The course requires students to do written compositions, oral exercises, read prose and poetry, study grammar and syntax, perform listening comprehension exercises, practice conversation, and expand vocabulary. The course will broaden students’ understanding of Hispanic culture and hopefully foster interest in continuing the study of Spanish in college. This course is equivalent to a fourth-semester college course in Advanced Spanish.

   AP Spanish Language is a fourth-year high school Spanish course that emphasizes the learning and honing of Spanish language skills and which prepares students to pass the Advanced Placement Examination in Spanish Language.  The course is designed for those students whose only experience with the Spanish language has been in a high school classroom environment.  Students who have enrolled in the course must have achieved either an A or a B in all of their previous Spanish courses, as well as their English courses.  It is assumed that the student has learned and has a good control of all the verb tenses, has acquired a reasonable vocabulary, has learned the major grammatical areas of study, can speak, read, write, and listen with a high degree of proficiency and is highly motivated.  Teacher recommendation is also necessary.

Goals (knowledge to be acquired, technical skills, etc., ESLRs must be referenced, standards alignment)

      This course covers the equivalent of a third-year college class in advanced Spanish composition, language, and conversation.  It encompasses aural/oral skills, reading comprehension, grammar, and conversation.  Such a course, emphasizing the use of Spanish for active communication, has the following objectives:

  1. the ability to comprehend formal and informal spoken Spanish;
  2. the acquisition of vocabulary and a grasp of structure to allow the easy, accurate reading of a newspaper article or a short story;
  3. the ability to compose expository passages;
  4. the ability to express ideas orally with accuracy and fluency.

The course seeks to develop language skills that are useful in themselves and that can be applied to various activities and disciplines rather than to the mastery of any specific subject matter.  Extensive training in the organization and writing of compositions are an integral part of the course.
